Everything you do to a lawn between Labor Day and Thanksgiving determines what it looks like next May. Fall is when cool-season grasses build roots; skipping fall work is why spring lawns come in thin and weedy. The sequence matters more than the products.

The Sequence (Northern & Transition Lawns)

1. Aerate (plug, not spike) — Labor Day to mid-September. Opens soil before seeding; renting a core aerator for a day beats buying a spike roller.
2. Overseed immediately after — seed-to-soil contact matters more than seed quantity. 4–6 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for fescue blends.
3. Starter fertilizer (higher P) at seeding, then a winterizer (higher K) after the final mow.
4. Mow 3.5–4" all fall. Taller grass = deeper roots = better winter survival.
5. Manage leaves weekly — mulch-mow light layers; rake or blow heavy ones. Mats of leaves kill grass by blocking light and trapping moisture.
